Unit 3 Asking the way (A)

Teaching material:

Part A, Unit 3, Fun with English (6B)

  Mr Smith comes from Australia. He is living in Nanjing now. He wants to visit the History Museum, but he does not know the way.He is asking Yang Ling how to get there.

Mr Smith: Excuse me, can you tell me the way to the History Museum, please?

Yang Ling: Let me see. Er…, go along this street, and then turn right at the third crossing. The museum is on your left. You can’t miss it.

Mr Smith: How far is it from here?

Yang Ling: It’s about a kilometre away.

Mr Smith: That’s a long walk.

Yang Ling: Well, to get there faster, you can take bus No.5.

Mr Smith: How many stops are there?

Yang Ling: Only two.

 

Mr Smith: Where’s the bus stop?

Yang Ling: It’s over there. There’s a bus every five minutes.

 Mr Smith: I want to go to the post office, too. Where is it?

Yang Ling: It’s on Zhongshan Road. You can take bus No.9 in front of the History Museum and get off at the third stop.

 Mr Smith: Thank you very much.

Yang Ling: You’re welcome.

Teaching aims and learning objectives:

By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1.    scan the text and find out how did Mr Green ask the way and how did Yang Ling show the way.

2. get to know the meaning of “way, get, along, take, stop, road, street

” both in spoken and written forms, and pronounce them clearly;

3. use structures like “Where’s the…? Excuse me, can you tell me the way to…? How far is it from here?” to ask the way.

4. use structures like“ Go along this street/ road, and then turn…at the …crossing. The…is on your…  You can take bus No. …and get off at the…stop.” to show the way.

5. use what they have learned to make up a new dialogue.

1. Understanding the dialogue well and get the details about asking the way and showing the way

1. The pronunciation、 meaning and usage of some words, such as “crossing, along, far, kilometre.”

Step 1.Greeting and free talk

1. T: Hello, boys and girls. I’m your new English teacher today. Firstly, I’d like you to know something about me. Please look at the pictures and try to say something about your new teacher.

     (Apple/ foot/ microphone/ Gulou)

  S1:

T: Good! Your English is good! Good try! (不提他们猜的是否准确,就鼓励他们多说)

Good guessing! Boys and girls, listen to me please, My name is Apple. I like singing and I can sing well! I live in Gulou. Every day, I go to work on foot. Because I want to keep fit. This is me. Do you know me?

  Ss: Yes.

2.    T: Now I want to know you. What’s your name? What’s your hobby?

      How do you go to school?

  S1: …

  S2: …

  S3: …

3.    T: Boys and girls, on your way to school, what can you see?

S1: …

T: Good! You can see some buildings, people on your way to school, and I can also see a lot of traffic signs on my way to work.

  Look, here they are! But what do they mean?

   T: What does this sign mean?

  Ss: Turn left.

   T: What about this one?

  Ss: Turn right.

   T: Look at this sign. What does it mean?

  Ss: Crossing.

   T: Do you know crossing? There’re many crossings in the street. Look, this is the first crossing.

  Ss: The second/ third crossing.

   T: Do you know crossing now? Let’s go on. What does this sign mean?

  Ss: Go along this street.

   T: Good! All the traffic signs can show us the way. Let’s read them.

  Ss: Read the signs together.

   T: You can read very well. This time, can you look and say their meanings?

  S1: Go along the Yellow Street, then turn right at the second crossing.

  S2: Go along the Yellow Street, then turn left at the first crossing.

   T: Good job! You know the signs well!

 

Step 2 Lead-in

1. T: All right. Just now, you knew your new English teacher, and you

learned some traffic signs. Look, this is my good friend. Can you say something about him according to the hints?

 Ss: He’s from Australia. Now he’s in Nanjing.

  T: Yes, Mr Smith is in Nanjing now. He wants to visit some places. But he doesn’t know the way. What should he do?

 Ss: Ask the way.

  T: Yes, now he is asking Yang Ling the way. Please read after me: Asking the way. (板书)

 Ss: Read: Asking the way.

  T: But where does he want to go? Let’s listen to their conversation and try to answer the question.

 Ss: Listen and think.

  T: Where does he want to go ? Have you got the answers?

 S1: History Museum and post office.

  T: Is he right? Here we have two new words. Please read after me:

     History Museum is where you can see old and historical things.

     Read after me: History Museum

     Post office is where you can post letters and buy stamps.

     Read after me: Post office

 

Step 3 Presentation and Practice

1. T: Mr Smith wants to go to the History Museum and post office. But where’s the History Museum? Where’s the post office?

     This time, read the dialogue by yourselves, draw the lines and circle the right places.

 Ss: Read, draw and find.

  T: Where’s the History Museum? Where’s the post office?

 S1: It’s over there!

 S2: The post office is over there.

  T: How do you know that? Which sentence tells you? Can you read the sentence?

 S1: Go along this street, then turn right at the third crossing, the museum is on your left.

     (教师板书，并引导学生学看动画，一起说)

 T: This is the post office. How do you know that?

S2: It’s on Zhongshan Road. You can take bus No. … and get off at the…stop.

  T: That’s right. (教师板书，并引导学生一起看动画，一起说)

2. T: Well done! We know Mr Smith is asking the way. But how does he ask the way? Please read the dialogue again and try to find the questions.

  Ss: Read and find.

   T: What are his questions?

      Question 1

  S1: Can you tell me the way to the History Museum, please?

   T: 教师板书 How about the second question?

  S2: How far is it from here?

   T: 教师板书并提问：

  S2: It’s about…away.

   T: Question three.

  S3: How many stops are there?

      The next question:

  S4: Where’s the…?

   T: Mr Smith has these questions.

3. T: How does Yang Ling answer the questions?

      Now please practice in pairs! One is asking the way, the other is telling the way. The map here can help you.

   Ss: Practice in pairs.

T: 全班check.

4.  T: I think most of you know the dialogue well. Now Yang Ling is telling Wang Bing about her conversation with Mr Smith. Please read and complete according to the dialogue.  

Ss: Check together.

 

Step 4 Task

1.    T: Close your books, boys and girls. At this lesson, you’ve learned   how to ask the way and how to show the way. Now let’s act! Suppose we’re in a mini city. There are many roads and streets in the mini city. Look, this is…Road. This is…Street.(共5条) And of course, there are many places. Look, zoo, park, cinema, supermarket, history museum.

T: I want to go to the zoo! Can you tell me the way to the zoo please?

Ss: …

T: Let’s act! You can leave out your seat!

   Ss: Act in pairs.

2.    T: So much for this. Boys and girls, there are a lot of teachers here.

      They’re from different cities. After listening to the class, they want to visit some places in Nanjing. Where can they go? There’re a lot of good places in Nanjing.

   S1:…

    T: That’s a good place.

   S2: …

    T: Oh, that’s a beautiful place.

       What other suggestion can you give to the teachers? Please discuss in pairs.

      You can use these sentences.

       You can choose any way that is convenient and comfortable for you.

       1 or 2 yuan for the bus.

       2, 3, or 4yuan for the metro.

       If you go by taxi, you will pay at least 9 yuan.

     And if you go on foot, remember to wear comfortable shoes.

Step 5 Homework

 1. Listen and read the dialogue fluently.

 2. Make a summary about asking the way and showing the way. Then write a dialogue about it.
